MUNCIE, Ind. - - Sophomore Matt Sprague (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette H.S.) and freshman Marcus Imwalle (Maria Stein, Oh./Marion Local H.S.) led the way last Sunday during the annual Alumni Match at Irving Gym as Ball State fans got their first look at the 2007-08 men's volleyball squad.
The current team tied the Alumni 2-2 (20-30, 30-21, 22-30, 30-28) in a predetermined four-game match. BSU won the second and fourth frames, while the Alumni won the first and third games.
Sprague posted 10 kills and nine digs while hitting .363. Imwalle looked impressive while pacing all players with 11 kills and adding three digs.
Overall, 10 current Cardinals compiled at least two kills and the same amount posted at least two digs.
On the alumni side, Jary Delgado paced the former Cardinals with eight kills and eight digs while hitting .400 for the evening.
Also posting solid attacking numbers for the alumni were Josh Lee and Keith Schunzel, who both logged seven kills. Schunzel also set the alumni to a .236 (48-22-110) rate of success in the match.
Sunday's match also saw the Meyer brothers on the court at the same time. The elder Nick Meyer, who graduated last season, was held to five kills and an ace while younger brother and freshman Lee Meyer totaled four kills and two digs.
Head coach Joel Walton, who is entering his 10th season leading the Cardinals, was pleased with the young team's performance Sunday.
“I thought we did some good things,” Walton said. “It was nice to be able to get everyone on our roster some playing time. I was pleased with what our young guys were able to do against a very experienced alumni squad.
“It's always great to have the alumni come back,” Walton added. “It gives us a chance to tell some stories and remember the days-gone-by. It was a great day with some fun experiences.”
