The Ball State field hockey team took more shots and attempted more penalty corners than Pacific on Thursday, but the Cardinals came out on the short end of a 5-3 decision at BSU Turf Field.
Freshman Brooke MacGillivary, senior Carla Chiampi and senior Tara Reed each notched their first goals of the season in the Cardinal loss.
MacGillivary scored Ball State's first goal of the day, putting in a loose ball in front of the cage at the 31:11 mark. But by that time, Pacific had already built a three-goal lead.
The Tigers added a fourth goal in the final minute of the first half on a shot by Jennifer Chaney to take a 4-1 lead at the break.
Ball State outscored Pacific in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the three-goal defcicit.
After Pacific built a 5-1 lead early in the second half on Katy McDonough's second goal of the match, Ball State responded with two goals.
Chiampi found the cage off an assist from Reed at the 44:11 mark, and Reed added a goal of her own on off a penalty corner in the final minute. Jamie Kahn picked up her second assist of the season on the play.
Ball State finished the match with 11 shots on goal to Pacific's eight and 13 penalty corners to the Tigers' five. Ball State senior Lindsay Quay led all players with eight shots, and she and Reed tied for match-high honors with three shots on goal.
The Cardinals held Pacific's Vianney Campos to one goal on three shots. Campos entered the match with seven goals in Pacific's five previous matches.
With the loss, Ball State falls to 0-4 on the season. The Cardinals return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. with a match against Saint Louis at BSU Turf Field.
