Chiampi's Overtime Heroics Lead Field Hockey To Conference Win Over Central Michigan
September 29, 2006 | Field Hockey
After trailing for the majority of the game Friday, the Ball State field hockey team rallied in the late stages to defeat Central Michigan 2-1 in overtime.
Carla Chiampi scored the game-clincher for the Cardinals on a penalty stroke four minutes into the overtime period. Ball State earned the penalty stroke when a shot was blocked by the body of a Central Michigan defender in the goal.
The goal secured the Cardinals' first conference victory and improved the program's record to 20-5 all-time in Mid-American Conference home openers.
Chiampi was also involved in Ball State's first goal of the day. She and Jodi Mann earned assists on the game-tying goal by Lindsay Quay on a penalty corner with slightly more than two minutes to play in regulation.
Quay notched her sixth goal of the season on the play, and Mann picked-up her team-leading fourth assist.
The Cardinals out-shot Central Michigan 18-13 and earned seven penalty corners to the Chippewas' four. Quay led all players with 10 shots, tying her season-high.
Central Michigan led the contest from the 19th minute until Quay's goal late in regulation thanks to a Samantha Sandham goal in the first half. Following that score, Ball State goalkeeper Caroline Lehman and the Cardinal defense shut the Chippewas out the rest of the way.
Lehman finished with five saves, and the defense held Central Michigan without a shot on goal in the second half. Lehman stopped two shots in overtime before Chiampi's goal won the game.
With the win, Ball State improves to 2-9 (1-2 MAC). The Cardinals return to action Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. vs. Missouri State at BSU Turf Field.
