Indiana 2, Ball State 1
September 02, 2006 | Field Hockey
The Ball State field hockey team held Indiana's offense in check Saturday, but the 10th-ranked Hoosiers escaped BSU Turf Field with a 2-1 win.
Ball State recorded 10 shots on goal to Indiana's nine and attempted seven penalty corners to the Hoosiers' five, but Lydia Schrott's goal at the 57:06 mark proved to be the difference for Indiana.
Schrott rebounded a shot by teammate Katie Kiper and put the ball past Ball State goalkeeper Caroline Lehman and into the cage for the game-winner.
Lehman saved seven shots on the day and shutout the Hoosiers in the first half. The freshman goalkeeper stopped a penalty shot by Indiana's Rachel Telian 17 minutes into the contest to keep the Hoosiers off the scoreboard. Lehman's strong performance and the Cardinals' solid defensive effort kept Ball State in the match.
"We look at defense as a team effort," Ball State coach Annette Payne said. "You can't rely on just one person. It's very critical that we play defense together as a team, and today we put it together."
After a scoreless opening 35 minutes, Kate O'Connell gave Indiana the lead with a goal at the 42:11 mark. Seven minutes later Katie Kloeckener scored her second goal of the season for Ball State to tie the score 1-1.
Kloeckener took a pass from Jamie Kahn, spun toward the cage and fired a shot past Indiana goalkeeper Haley Exner, who recorded nine saves on the day. The assist was the first of the season for Kahn.
Kloeckener and Mid-American Conference scoring leader Lindsay Quay led Ball State with three shots on goal each.
"I'm really proud of our team," Payne said. "Their performance today shows what they are capable of."
The loss drops Ball State's record to 0-3. The Cardinals will host Pacific at 3 p.m. Thursday before taking on Saint Louis Saturday at 2 p.m. at BSU Turf Field.
