Appalachian State Tops Women's Volleyball

Bowling Green, Ky. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team's road woes continued Saturday morning with a 1-3 (30-24, 22-30, 18-30, 28-30) loss to Appalachian State in its second match of the Lady Topper Invitational hosted by Western Kentucky. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 2-7 on the year, while the Mountaineers improve to 7-6.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first set, the Cardinals rallied off the next three points to pull ahead 3-2. The teams would then play to a 5-5 tie before a kill from freshman Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) and an ASU attack error gave Ball State an edge it would not surrender the rest of the set. BSU pulled ahead by as many as 10 points - - at 21-11 - - before winning the game 30-25 on another Breivogel kill.
In the second stanza, Appalachian State would pull ahead 5-1, only to see BSU tie the game at 5-5. The score would remain tied at 6-6 before an 8-1 Mountaineers run gave ASU the lead for good. BSU would get no closer than five points the rest of the way, dropping the set 22-30.
The Mountaineers would continue to play well in the third game, opening a 10-2 edge, and pulling ahead by 10 points at 13-3. The only bright spot of the third set came at the 22-10 mark, when Cochran recorded her 1,000th career kill. BSU would get as close as eight points - - at 26-18 - - only to give up the final four points and lose the game 30-18.
The fourth game turned out to be the most competitive of the morning, with 13 ties and nine total lead changes. After playing to a 23-23 tie, the Cardinals looked poised to with the game after going on a 5-1 run to make the score 28-24. However, six straight points from Appalachian State gave the Mountaineers the game at 30-28 and the match at 3-1.
Junior
Breivogel scored six kills and four digs in the contest, while Angie Parrell (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights H.S.) added 30 assists, 10 digs and six kills. With her 30 assists, Parrell is now four shy of 2,000 in her career at 1,996.
Senior libero Amanda McCormick (Muncie, Ind./Burris H.S.) saw her string of match with 30-plus digs come to an end, falling one shy with 29 in the loss. She also posted six assists and an ace.
Also factoring in the loss for BSU were: Cassie Conner (Willow Springs, Ill./Lyons Township H.S.) with 10 assists, eight digs, two aces and two kills;
For the match, Ball State was limited to a .086 (53-35-209) attack percentage, while Appalachian State hit .144 (56-29-187). ASU also held a 101 to 90 advantage in digs and a
Three Mountaineers tallied double-figure kills in the contest, paced by Dianna Thomas' match-high 16. Cassie Engelgau paced all players with 42 digs.
