William & Mary 4, Ball State 1
August 26, 2006 | Field Hockey
Ball State struck first but was unable to hold the lead in Saturday's season-opening field hockey match, falling 4-1 to William and Mary at BSU Turf Field.
After a scoreless first half, forward Lindsay Quay put the Cardinals on the board first, deflecting a Lauren Cruz pass into the goal at the 37:01 mark. Quay was an All-MAC First Team selection in 2005. Dating back to last season, she has scored at least one goal in five of Ball State's past seven games.
But William and Mary (1-0), which entered the game receiving votes in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Poll, did not take long to respond.
The Tribe's Gina Cimarelli answered Quay's goal on a deflection in front of the cage at the 39:36 mark. Fourteen minutes later, Cimarelli found the goal again on a rebound shot to give William and Mary a 2-1 lead.
Maggie Long added two more second-half goals for William and Mary to give the Tribe a three-goal advantage.
Quay finished with three shots on goal and senior midfielder Carla Chiampi added a shot. William and Mary finished with 21 shots, led by Long, who recorded seven shots and five shots on goal.
Caroline Lehman started and played the entire match in the cage for Ball State. The freshman recorded 11 saves and shut out William and Mary in the first half.
The Cardinals (0-1) return to action Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest against Northwestern at BSU Turf Field. The match is the second of five consecutive home contests to open the season for Ball State.
