May 09, 2006 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State senior first baseman Brad Miller (Muncie, Ind./Central H.S.) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for his part in guiding the Cardinals to a series sweep of Toledo last weekend at Ball Diamond. The award is the first for Miller this season and the third of his career.
The school's all-time career hits leader with 283, Miller finished the three-game set versus the Rockets with a .500 batting average, going 6-for-12 while drawing four walks. He tallied eight RBI in the series, while adding seven runs scored a double and the 45th home run of his career. Defensively, he paced the club with 25 putouts and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 28 attempts.
Miller, who went 2-for-4 in all three contests, started the series with a three-run double in the first inning of Friday's 14-6 victory. He also helped plate the eventual game-winning run with his RBI single in the second. With runners at first and second, Miller deposited a hit into right field to drive in BSU's sixth run of the contest, while an error on the throw trying to catch the runner at third allowed the team's seventh run to score. Miller would go on to draw walks in the fifth and seventh innings. He finished the contest with four RBI and three runs scored.
In Saturday's 9-4 victory, Miller scored in both the third and the fifth innings, to help secure the victory. He drew a walk in the bottom of the third before coming in to score and crossed the plate again in the fifth after a leadoff single. Miller also belted a single in the sixth, finishing the contest with two hits and a pair of runs scored.
In the series finale Miller provided the only offense the Cardinals would need in a 13-0 shutout, belting his MAC-leading 16th homer of the season - - a two-run shot to left-center field - - and the 45th of his career in the bottom of the first inning. He would also add a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, after drawing an intentional walk in the fifth. Miller would finish the contest with four RBI and two runs scored.
Miller and the Ball State baseball team will wrap-up the 2006 home slate later this afternoon (Tuesday) with a 3 p.m. first pitch versus Indiana State at Ball Diamond.
