Cardinals Drop 7-2 Decision to Flashes
April 16, 2006 | Baseball
The Cardinals, who posted two singles in the second inning by seniors C.J. Webb (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) and Kyle Dygert (Angola, Ind./Angola), held the Golden Flashes scoreless and hitless for the first four innings before allowing three hits and a run in the fifth.
Kent State loaded the bases with a double, single and a walk, and then Todd Balduf scored on a wild pitch to give the Flashes a 1-0 lead.
KSU added six runs in the bottom of the sixth, first on a sac fly by Drew Saylor to drive in one run, then Kurt Eichorn emptied the bases with a two-run shot to right field. Will Vazquez doubled to left field to knock in two more runs for the Flashes and Chris Tremblay singled to drive in Vazquez.
Junior Matt Gard (Muncie, Ind./Central) singled down the right field line in the seventh for the Cardinals' third hit.
After the walk of senior Matt Singleton (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) in the eighth, senior Mike Sullivan (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) posted an infield single to the third baseman. Redshirt-sophomore Justin Rogers (St. Paris, Ohio/Graham) nailed his first pitch up the middle for an RBI single, scoring Singleton and moving Sullivan to third. Webb looped an RBI single into shallow left field to score Sullivan, moving the score to 7-2 in favor of KSU.
Junior Ryan DeGeeter (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw) pitched 5.2 innings in the losing effort (2-4), giving up seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out three batters.
The Cardinals travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, to square-off with the Xavier Musketeers (11-25, 3-8 Atlantic 10) Tuesday at 3 p.m.
