Men's Volleyball Takes Out Central State 3-0

Muncie, Ind. - - Thanks to the help of the team's Missouri connection, the Ball State men's volleyball team collected a 3-0 (30-7, 30-7, 30-12) victory over visiting Central State Tuesday evening at Worthen Arena. With the win, BSU improves to 17-5 on the year, while CSU drops to 0-9.
In BSU's second victory over the Marauders this season, BSU's two players from the state of Missouri - - Ryan Clarke (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South H.S.) and Doug Willmann (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North H.S.) - - set the pace for the club.
Both would post double-figure kill totals, with Clarke smashing a career-high 11 and Willmann tying a career-high with 10. Clarke would also finish the match with a perfect 1.000 (11-0-11) attack percentage, while Willmann hit for a .750 (
After Central State's Tim Cannon recorded his first career service ace to open the contest, the Ball State offense kicked in, with a pair of kills from Clarke surrounding a pair of kills from Todd Chamberlain (Louisville, Ky./Trinity H.S.), to push the score to 4-1. From there, the Cardinals would build a 16-7 advantage before BSU's Mark Rumschik (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park H.S.) served the final 14 of the game, which included five of his career-high eight service aces.
The second set opened with a BSU service error, before a kill from Chamberlain set up another long service run from Rumschik who pushed the score to 7-1. After trading the next six points - - making the score 10-4 - - Carlos Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Florida Air Academy) would go on a 12-point service run to put the game completely out of reach at 21-5. BSU would go on to win the set 30-7.
After a Clarke kill to open the third and final game, Matt McCarthy (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South H.S.) would tally three straight service aces to move the score to 4-0. After a BSU attack error, Ted Summers-Torres (San Diego, Calif./University of San Diego H.S.) would collect his first career kill to give BSU a 5-1 advantage.
The score in the third game would remain relatively close to the 20-11 mark, before Mark Termion (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North H.S.) went on a service run of his own, pushing the score to 28-12. During the run, Termion collected four of his six service aces on the night. Summers-Torres would then add the final two points of the match with his second career kill and a match-winning service ace.
Overall, the Cardinals finished the night with a .548 (43-9-62) attack percentage, compared to a -.256 (
Ball State's 27 service aces - - which included eight from Rumschik, seven from Willmann, six from Termion, three from McCarthy, two from Ramos and one from Summers-Torres - - are the second-highest team total in a match in school history, following only the 30 from the Feb. 7 Central State match.
Summers-Torres would pace all players with 22 assists after serving as BSU's setter in the first two games, while Rumschik added a career-high 11 dishes as the teams setter in game three. Rumschik would also pace all players with eight digs.
BSU's defense would also limited CSU to three kills in the match - - one each from Anthony Jackson, James Hampton and Gemayle Pullins - - which is a school record for fewest kills allowed in a match under rally scoring.
In addition to their kills, Jackson would collect a match-high two solo blocks, while Pullins added a team-high four digs.
