Women's Tennis Suffers First MAC Loss of Season at Toledo
March 24, 2006 | Women's Tennis
Toledo started off the contest by winning the doubles point after taking two of the three matches. Ball State's Katie Owens and Stephanie Farrar came up with the Cardinals' lone doubles win with a 9-8 decision at the No. 2 slot over UT's Jenny Belsky and Viviana Rivero.
The singles matches were fiercely contested as three matches went the distance. After Toledo nabbed wins at the No. 6 and No. 2 position, Ball State stormed back to steal the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Jennifer Pollack added the win at No. 3 over Rivero, while Haly Calderwood and Katie Owens defeated their opponents -- Belsky and Sarah Horning -- at the No. 4 and No. 5 slots, respectively.
The outcome of the match came down to the No. 1 singles contest between Toledo's Myriam Cueva and Ball State's Jessica Thompson. After Thompson took the first set 6-3, Cueva came back and secured the second 6-2. Three hours later and after many spirited rallies between the two players, Cueva captured the third set 6-4.
Ball State (6-7, 0-1 MAC) looks to rally tomorrow when it takes on MAC foe Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. in Ypsilanti, Mich.
