Softball vs. Evansvile-2
After opening its season with back-to-back wins Saturday, Ball State suffered two-straight losses Sunday at the Evansville Tournament to even its spring slate at 2-2. The Cardinals, who mustered just eight hits on the day compared to 19 one day earlier, fell 7-1 to Mississippi in game one and then 6-2 to the host Purple Aces in the nightcap.
Ole Miss struck first, but Ball State answered with a run in the bottom of the third. The Rebels added two more runs in the fifth and then four in the sixth for the final margin of victory. BSU got four hits -- all from different people. Quincy Duran took the loss, yielding all seven runs and striking out five.
In the second game, Evansville scored all the runs it would need with three in the top half of the first. Ball State got both of its runs in the second, but the Aces responded with three more in the bottom of the sixth. The Cardinals managed four hits to UE's nine. Abby Gross led the way with two for a total of three on the day. Nicki Hellem suffered the loss, surrendering five runs and striking out four.
BSU continues its season Thursday at Louisville, Ky., with single games against Bellarmine and IUPUI.
