Slow Start Dooms Cards At Toledo
February 26, 2006 | Men's Basketball
The Ball State men's basketball team fell to MAC West foe Toledo 81-54 Sunday at Savage Hall.
D'Andre Peyton finished as the only Ball State scorer in double figures with 11 points.
"We didn't show up with any energy," Ball State forward Skip Mills said. "We just didn't have it today. It's hard to play basketball when you're flat."
Jalon Perryman opened the game with a three-pointer for Ball State, but the Cardinals then suffered a 10-minute scoring drought. By the time Perryman scored the Cardinals' next basket, they trailed 17-6.
Perryman scored eight points to go along with eight more from Mills. MAC Freshman of the Year candidate Maurice Acker added seven points and handed out four assists.
Ball State managed 34 percent shooting from the floor compared to 49 percent for Toledo. The Cardinals did win the rebounding battle 36-32.
Toledo put four players in double figures, including Justin Ingram, who scored 18 points, and Tyrone Kent, who scored a career-high 16.
"From the tip, it was a slow start, a poor start," Ball State coach Tim Buckley said. "Toledo is a good team at home, and you can't give them that opportunity. If you don't come out focused, it's difficult to re-focus."
Ball State falls to 9-16 (5-11 MAC), and Toledo improves to 15-10 (8-8).
The Cardinals return to action with a 7 p.m. tip Wednesday against Northern Illinois at Worthen Arena for Retro Night III. Ball State's 1980-81 MAC Championship team will be honored, and the current team will be wearing uniforms replicating those from the '80-81 season.
