Gymnastics Picks Up First MAC Victory at Cardinal Classic

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State gymnastics team posted a second-place finish at its own Cardinal Classic Friday evening in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals finished with 187.875 points, while Michigan State captured the title with 191.025 points. Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green finished in third place with a score of 183.625. The win over Bowling Green was the first conference win for first-year head coach Lisa Simonton as the Cardinals move to 1-6 overall this season.
Junior Kelly Watson paced the squad with her second place finish on floor (9.700) and in the all-around competition (38.175).
Also chipping in for the Cardinals was sophomore Erica Gilkerson and junior Jenna Tarkington, who both managed BSU top score on the vault with a 9.650. The score was good enough for the duo to tie for fourth place.
Sophomore Brittany George tied Watson for sixth place on bars (9.475). Watson also recorded BSU's top spot on beam with a fourth-place score of 9.450. Junior Kaitlyn Wills helped the team by finishing fourth on the floor with a 9.525.
The Cardinals return to the mat next Sunday when they travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for a 2 p.m. meet versus league rival Central Michigan.
