MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State head women's soccer coach Ron Rainey has accepted the head coaching position at the University of Iowa, as announced by the university yesterday. Rainey moves on to the Big Ten school after serving seven seasons as head mentor for the Cardinals.
"This is an outstanding opportunity for me as a professional and for my family," Rainey said. "Leaving Ball State is very difficult because of all of the quality people we have met and been associated with the last seven years. Ball State and the Muncie community have been wonderful to me and my family and we are looking forward to developing the same relationships in the state of Iowa and amongst the University of Iowa community."
"All of us at Ball State are very happy and excited for Ron and his family as he accepts the soccer position at Iowa," Ball State associate athletics director Pat Quinn said. "Ron has built a strong program at Ball State and we look forward to building upon its foundation as we strive to win a Mid-American Conference Championship. The Ball State family wish Ron, Margaret and his children the best in their move to Iowa City."
As Ball State's only women's soccer coach since the program's inception, Rainey departs after recording a 70-52-17 overall record. Rainey helped lead the 2005 Cardinals to one of the most successful seasons in program history, as the squad posted a 15-3-2 overall record and a second-place mark in the MAC. The squad's second-place finish was matched by the 2002 team and ties as the best in school history.
