Ball State University Athletics
Field Hockey Defeated by Former MAC Rival Louisville
September 17, 2005 | Field Hockey
Louisville's Jen Kastelic opened the scoring at 7:09 of the first half on a pass from national points leader Jessica Javalet. Janelle Avila added another goal at 16:05, with another assist to Javalet, who has 34 points on the season through eight games.
At 25:07, Jen Payne scored an unassisted goal, while Casey Diener added Louisville's fourth at 32:10 on a pass from Payne. Ball State senior goalkeeper Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge), came out with just 2:15 remaining in the first half, replaced by junior Jessica Malone (Tabernacle, N.J./Shawnee).
For UL's fifth goal, Lisa Wasser used a penalty corner to her advantage as she put the ball into the back of the net at 33:34, with assists from Kastelic and April White.
In a very balanced second half, Ball State came out with the only score as senior Chantelle Isaac-Smith (Clayton, Calif./Concord) notched her sixth goal of the season with a diving tip-in on the left side of the net on a pass from sophomore Katie Kloeckener (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx). The assist was the second of Kloeckener's career and it was her second straight game with an assist, also on a goal by Isaac-Smith.
Bannister finished with three saves and four goals-against in her 32:45 minutes between the pipes, while Malone managed two saves in 37:15 minutes of action, holding UL to only one goal.
Louisville, a former member of the Mid-American Conference and currently in its first year in the Big East, outshot BSU 24-8 and held an 11-4 edge in penalty corners. Ball State still owns a 15-8 edge in the all-time series, dating back to the first meeting in 1994.
Ball State hosts Ohio State, currently ranked 17th in the Sept. 13 STX/NFHCA Coaches Poll, in its home-opener Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the BSU Turf Field.
