CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Behind a four-goal effort from the Cavaliers' Katie Phillips, the University of Virginia field hockey team defeated Ball State 7-1 Sunday afternoon at University Hall Turf Field, dropping the Cardinals to 0-2 on the season and improving Virginia's record to 2-0.
Phillips opened the game with a goal just over six minutes into the action and followed that with another three minutes later. The Cavaliers' Allison Flynn and Margaretha Ehret rounded out the first-half scoring with one goal apiece.
At the 46:23 mark of the second half, Phillips notched her first hat-trick of the young season. Ball State senior Chantelle Isaac-Smith (Clayton, Calif./Concord) responded by adding her first goal of the year on a pass from junior Tara Reed (Temple, Pa./Oley Valley), after Reed took the initial shot and gathered the rebound.
Also recording shots for the Cardinals were junior Lindsay Quay (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) with two, plus sophomores Theran Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) and Katie Kloeckener (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) with one each.
Virginia's Flynn added an unassisted score at 60:28, while in the closing seconds Phillips put her fourth goal into the back of the net to set the final score at 7-1.
BSU senior goalkeeper Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) made her first start of the season and stopped three shots in the 70-minute effort.
Virginia totaled 14 shots to Ball State's seven, while the teams both had seven penalty corners.
After a week off, the Cardinals will return to action Sept. 9 at Iowa and Sept. 10 versus Providence, with both games being held in Iowa City, Iowa, at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field.
