Ball State Field Hockey Drops Season Opener to William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- In the season opener for both squads, the Ball State field hockey team fell 4-1 to William & Mary Saturday at Busch Field.
W&M's first goal came just 16:50 into the game with a score by Laura Kastelic. Gina Cimarelli followed that up with one of her own less than a minute later to give the Tribe an early 2-0 lead.
Junior Lindsay Quay (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), a 2004 All-MAC First Team selection, broke through the Tribe defense at the 58:21 mark and pulled the Cardinals within a goal by putting an unassisted shot past W&M goalkeeper Gwen Hunter.
Four minutes had passed when Jessica Kacerek notched a goal off of a penalty corner, accompanied by a JJ Kubicek strike at 66:16 to give William & Mary, a team that finished the 2004 season ranked 15th in the STX/NFHCA National Coaches poll with a13-7 overall mark, a 4-1 advantage.
Junior Jessica Malone (Tabernacle, N.J./Shawnee), who made her fourth career start in goal, played the entire 70 minutes and stopped six shots while allowing four goals against. Malone's counterpart, Hunter, made one save and allowed one goal in the same amount of time.
The Tribe out shot Ball State 8-1 in the first half and 15-1 in the second, while also holding the advantage in penalty corners with a 15-2 margin for the game.
The Cardinals (0-1; 0-0 MAC) travel to Charlottesville, Va., to take on the University of Virginia Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at University Hall Turf Field. With a 10-10 overall record, the Cavaliers ranked 18th in the final 2004 STX/NFHCA National Coaches poll. Virginia defeated Ball State in 1997, the lone meeting between the teams.
