Field Hockey Upends Miami in Overtime Shutout Victory
October 07, 2005 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State field hockey team earned its second win of the season by defeating the Miami RedHawks 1-0 in overtime Friday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field.
By stretching the field with more longer offensive passes than usual, the Cardinals dominated the game from the start, with a 9-1 shot advantage and a 4-1 edge in penalty corners following the first half of play.
In a second stanza filled with penalty corners, BSU increased its shot lead by firing 11 compared to the RedHawks' lone attempt. The Cardinals held an 8-2 edge in corners during the half.
Both goalkeepers kept the game scoreless through regulation. Ball State's Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) made her only save of the game during the second half, while watching her teammates spend most of the game on the opposite end of the field. Surrounded by Cardinals, Miami's Kerri Orr was forced to make six saves -- five during regulation.
Finally in overtime, during the 78th minute, Ball State's Lauren Cruz (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and Chantelle Isaac (Clayton, Calif./Concord) broke free for a two-on-one fastbreak. Isaac passed to Cruz, who flipped it back to Isaac ahead of the defender. Isaac swiftly placed the game-winner past Orr for her seventh goal of the year at 78:04.
Bannister picked up her second win of the year and her fifth solo shutout of her career. Cruz's helper was her first of the season and second of her young career.
Overall, Ball State finished with a 13-5 advantage in corners and a 22-3 edge in shots.
Ball State (2-8, 1-2 MAC) will host Missouri State (1-10, 1-3 MAC) Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest at the BSU Turf Field. The four Cardinal seniors will be honored prior to the game.
