Soccer Team Tallies Another Shutout with 2-0 Win Over Western Michigan
October 23, 2005 | Soccer
Western Michigan (9-7-1, 7-3-0 MAC) came to Muncie tied for the top spot in the league standings, yet it could not stop the Ball State offense as the Cardinals posted 16 shots to the Broncos' five. The BSU defense held WMU to just one shot in the second stanza.
"We are excited about the weekend," said Ball State head coach Ron Rainey. "We played very well in our final home weekend. Both games were real physical and real direct. Today, we saw some good opportunities and got some good scoring chances."
In the corner kicks column, the Cardinals also held a six to two edge.
Junior midfielder Vandi Ogden took a long shot from deep on the right side and converted on her fourth goal of the season at the 12:55 mark. The 1-0 Ball State lead would be taken into the second half.
Senior Krista Mitts took advantage of her final regular-season home game as a Cardinal by heading in her first goal of the campaign from the defensive position. Her goal was assisted by sophomore midfielder Angie Heyer in the 72nd minute.
Freshman forward Emily Rein matched Western Michigan's total number of shots with five of her own for the Cardinals. Sophomore Sarah Leibel added three shots, while Ogden chipped in with two.
Junior goalkeeper Alison Becker notched her eighth shutout of the season, playing all 90 minutes in goal with two saves.
Ball State closes out its regular season with a 3 p.m. road game at Miami Friday.
