MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team will look to continue the momentum from last weekend on their trips to Quincy and Lindenwood. The Cardinals will take on Quincy on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. Ball State will then battle Lindenwood on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
The Ball State men's volleyball team is coming off a huge weekend with two top ten upsets. The Cardinals broke both Lewis and Loyola-Chicago's eight match win streaks. Ball State swept the No. 8 Flyers, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20) to win their first conference win of the season. The next night the Cardinals were able to pick up MIVA win number two in a 3-1 (34-32, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21) victory over the sixth ranked Ramblers. Ball State moved back into the top 15 in the AVCA Coaches Poll after taking down those two teams.
Scouting Quincy:
The first matchup this weekend will be at Quincy. The Hawks will come into this weekend with an 8-7 overall record, 0-4 in the MIVA. The team is on a four match losing streak losing to Loyola, Lewis, Ohio State and McKendree. Senior Anthony Winter leads the team this season with 158 kills for 3.29 kills per set. Winter has a .285 hitting percentage and 192 points through the 2018 season. Shane McAdams has knocked down 125 kills for 2.40 kills per set this season.
The Cardinals lead the all-times series, 48-5. Ball State has won the last four meetings between the two teams. Last year the two teams met up twice. In the first matchup, the Cardinals won the match 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-17). Matt Szews had a match-high 16 kills along with four digs and four service aces. Matt Walsh knocked down nine kills and four blocks. Nick LaVanchy led the way in digs with seven. The Hawks took Ball State to five sets in the second meeting, but fell to the Cardinals, 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 24-26, 26-24, 15-12). Szews and Walsh each had 13 kills. Szews also had 12 digs, three blocks, two aces and one assist. Walsh had four aces and four blocks. Adam Wessel had a team-high 16 digs in the win.
Scouting Lindenwood:
Lindenwood enters the weekend with a 6-7 record, 1-4 in conference action. The Lions will look to take down Fort Wayne the night before battling Ball State. Connor Hipelius leads the team with 90 kills for a .410 hitting percentage. Michael Jennings has 89 kills for 3.30 kills per set so far this season.
The Cardinals are 13-2 all-time against Lindenwood. Ball State has won four matches straight. The first meeting last season was at Lindenwood in February 2017. The Cardinals won that match, 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 27-25). Matt Szews and Matt Walsh each had 10 kills. They each had two aces on the night. Walsh also had a match-high seven blocks. Nick LaVanchy had nine digs and three assists. The next matchup was in Muncie, where Ball State won again, 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-18). In that match, Blake Reardon had 10 kills with Matt Szews adding nine. Szews also had eight digs, six blocks, three assists and three service aces. Matt Walsh led the way in blocks with seven along with two service aces.

After last week's performances, setter Jake Romano was named the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week. He led the team in digs for the weekend with 27 and 3.86 digs per set. The Racine, Wisconsin native also had four block assists and one solo block for the weekend.
Matt Walsh and Mitch Weiler are also the two Cardinals that are ranked in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. Weiler is fourth in total digs with 103. Walsh is fifth with a .399 hitting percentage. That hitting percentage also places him 12th nationally. Walsh is also nationally ranked in blocks per set. He is 22nd in the country with 1.03 blocks per set this season.
As a team, the Cardinals are in the MIVA top three in multiple stat categories. Ball State is first in kills (655), block assists (219), total team blocks (130), points (855.5), digs (538), digs per set (9.78) and assists (611). The Cardinals are third in service aces with 71 and third in solo blocks with 20.
Ball State is also ranked nationally in a few team categories. The Cardinals are fifth in team attacks per set with 28.85. Ball State has tallied 9.78 digs per set, which sits them fifth in the country. They sit at 12th in both opponent hitting percentage (.222) and 16th in blocks per set (2.35).

Matt Walsh's name can be found in 11 different places in the Ball State record book. That is the most of any current player. Walsh is second in school history (during rally scoring era) in total career blocks (428) and in block assists (387). He has marked 80 career service aces so far, which sits him in third all-time (during rally scoring era). Walsh sits in the sixth spot in career attack percentage (.404) and in blocks per set (1.20). His 41 career solo blocks put him eighth in school history while his 980.5 career points put him in sixth. Other places you will find his name are points per set, kills, service attempts and service aces per set.
Mitch Weiler's name is also etched in the record books. He leads the team this year in digs and is 14th in school history (during rally scoring era) with 446 career digs. Matt Szews is second in Ball State history (during rally scoring era) service aces per set with 0.33 through 154 sets. He is also fourth in kills per set (3.18) and in points per set (3.85). As a sophomore, Szews already has 51 career service aces, which is 13th in the record books. He is also 17th in attack attempts with 1247. Szews is 20th nationally in attacks per set with 7.60.
Adam Wessel, Courtland Scharenborg, and Jake Romano are all ranked in Ball State history in assists. Scharenborg is 11th with 268 with Romano in 10th with 308.
