Men’s Volleyball Returns to Worthen This Weekend for Two MIVA Matches

MUNCIE, Ind. – The No. 12 Ball State men's volleyball team returns home for the last four matches of the season, beginning this weekend. The Cardinals will take on Quincy in the first of the four remaining MIVA matches on Friday, March 31. Ball State will then take on Lindenwood Saturday, April 1. Both matches will take place in Worthen Arena and start at 7:30 p.m.
Last meetings:
When the Quincy came to Muncie in April for the first meeting last season, Ball State took the win, 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-18). The Cardinals had 32 kills, 12 of those by Brendan Surane. Mike Scannell knocked down eight kills along with adding three blocks and two service aces. Matt Walsh had five kills and a team high 10 blocks.
The Cardinals went on to sweep the Hawks again in the second meeting (25-11, 25-17, 26-24). Both teams tallied 37 kills, but Ball State won the battle with a .387 hitting percentage. The leaders in kills were Surane (14), Cartagena (7) and Walsh (6). Cartagena and Weiler each had one service ace. In blocks, Pia had a team high seven while Surane added four and Cartagena added three. Wessel led the way with nine digs.
In the first meeting between Ball State and Lindenwood last season, the Cardinals won the match, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-15). Mitch Weiler and Matt Walsh both knocked down four kills. Walsh also led the team in that contest with his seven blocks. Weiler added six blocks. Adam Wessel had a team high eight digs.
The Cardinals swept the Lions once again in the second meeting in April (25-14, 25-18, 25-19). Brendan Surane came up huge in that contest leading the team in kills (11), aces (3) and blocks (5). Edgardo Cartagena also had a big night tallying nine kills, four digs, one ace and one assist. Other big performances were Weiler with seven kills and a team high seven digs, Walsh with five blocks and two aces, and Alex Pia with four blocks.
Earlier this season, Matt Szews knocked down 16 kills along with four service aces and four digs in the sweep over Quincy. Lavanchy led the way with seven digs while Connor Gross added 38 assists.
In the 3-1 victory over Lindenwood in February, Surane, Szews and Walsh each tallied 10 kills. Walsh led the way in blocks with seven.
Cardinals Facts:
Going into this week's matches, the Cardinals are first in the conference in digs per set with 8.98. Ball State is also second in the MIVA in kills per set (12.33)and second in assists per set (11.43). The Cardinals' .284 hitting percentage puts them third in the conference.
Freshman Matt Szews leads the team with 289 total kills, 3.52 kills per set and a .261 hitting percentage. His 289 total kills and 3.52 kills per set place him fourth in the MIVA in both categories. He also has a team high 30 service aces and has .37 aces per set, third in the conference.
Edgardo Cartagena had big performances in the matches against UC Irvine and UC San Diego. Cartagena had six kills and three digs against the Anteaters. He added seven kills for a .286 hitting percentage and eight digs in the sweep of UC San Diego. He came out strong against McKendree and Ohio State too, tallying 11 kills, four digs and one solo block.
Sophomore libero Adam Wessel sits at fourth in the MIVA with 2.02 digs per set. Wessel has 87 digs and 17 assists on the season.
In the record books:
Preseason All-MIVA selection Matt Walsh sits at second in the MIVA with .471 hitting percentage. He is also third in the conference with 1.18 blocks per set. Due to his performances in the month of March, Walsh is a finalist for Off the Block National Player of the Month. Walsh's name can also be found all over the Ball State volleyball career record books (during rally scoring). He is sixth in attack percentage (.406), sixth in blocks per set (1.23), fourth in block assists (309), sixth in total blocks (340), 11th in service aces (53) and 10th in solo blocks (31).
Senior Alex Pia also has stamped his name in the record books (during rally scoring). Pia is 10th in career blocks per set with 1.01 through 191 sets. He is also 15th in career block assists (187) and tied for 17th in total career blocks (193).
Senior preseason All-MIVA selection Brendan Surane moved into eighth in school history (during rally scoring) with 719 kills. Surane is also 17th (during rally scoring) in career solo blocks with 27 along with a sixth place spot in service aces (65). He is also 15th with a career attack percentage of .278, 14th with 2.25 kills per set, 17th in block assists (174) and 15th in total blocks (201).
Connor Gross took his place in the record books, sitting at seventh (during rally scoring) in career assists with 1,072 through 118 sets. Last week, he had 60 assists, 8.57 assists per set along with 12 digs and five blocks. The senior setter has 853 assists so far this season. He averages 10.40 assists per set, placing him first in the conference.
