Men’s Golf Splits Two on Opening Day of Match Play

Cardinals to meet Miami in Tuesday’s third-place match

DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Ball State men's golf team split two matches Monday on the opening day of its spring schedule at its own Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play.
The Cardinals, seeded third based of Golfstat rankings, posted a 4-2 victory over No. 6 seed Ohio in the morning round. They fell 4-2 to No. 2 seed Notre Dame in the afternoon semifinal.
Ball state will square off against Miami in Tuesday's third-place match, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the South Course at Lake Jovita Country Club.
Michael VanDeventer won both of his matches for the Cardinals at the No. 2 position in the lineup Monday with neither one of them reaching the final hole.
Johnny Watts, Michael Makris and Keegan McKinney recorded the other points for Ball State in the morning win over Ohio, while Timothy Wiseman provided the team's second point against Notre Dame.
The Fighting Irish edged Ball State in tight matches at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 positions, all of which reached the final hole, to advance to Tuesday's championship match. They will meet No. 4 seed Seton Hall, which reached the finals with victories over Toledo and Miami.
The Pirates' match with the RedHawks was one of three in the afternoon to finish All Square, needing the event's tiebreaker procedure to determine the advancing team. Seton Hall moved on by virtue of winning more total holes in the match.
