MUNCIE, Ind. - - After posting a 3-0 record in the circle last week, Ball State softball sophomore pitcher Kelsey Schifferdecker (Belton, Mo./Belton) has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week as voted on by the league’s faculty athletics representatives.
A three-time MAC West Division Pitcher of the Week this season, Schifferdecker earns MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week accolades for the first time in her career. The Scholar Athlete of the Week Award is presented to one male and one female MAC student-athlete each week that has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0-or-better and performs well during the previous week's competition.
“I am very excited for Kelsey to be recognized not only for her athletic accomplishments, but for her work in the classroom as well,” Ball State head coach Tyra Perry said. “Kelsey is a very hard worker on the field and puts just as much, if not more, time into her studies. For her to maintain a 3.95 grade-point average with nearly two seasons of play under her belt is a testament to how hard she works and how focused she is on being an outstanding student-athlete.”
Schifferdecker, a business major with a 3.954 grade-point average, turned in a solid all-around week by leading the Cardinals to a 3-0 record over her three starts, highlighted by a complete game shutout of MAC-leading Ohio last Sunday. In the win, Schifferdecker limited the Bobcats to just three hits and a walk over 7.0 innings of work. She also tallied three strikeouts, including the final batter of the game.
In Friday’s doubleheader versus Akron, Schifferdecker entered the first game in relief and held the Zips to just six hits and one run over 5.0 innings of work in a 4-2 loss. In the nightcap, she threw 4.2 innings and surrendered just one run and six hits to guide the Cardinals to a 15-2 (5 inn.) victory. Schifferdecker opened the week by leading Ball State to a 6-3 victory at Indiana, limiting the Hoosiers to 12 hits and three runs in a complete game win.
Schifferdecker finished the week with a 1.48 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) over 23.2 innings of work. In league-only contests this season, Schifferdecker is second in the MAC with a 1.53 ERA. She owns a 4-1 record in MAC action and has held opposing batters to a .245 average over 36.2 innings of work.
Schifferdecker and the Ball State softball team return to action with a two-game weekend series versus its Mid-American Conference travel partner Miami. The teams are scheduled to play single games Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) at the BSU Softball Complex.
