MUNCIE, Ind. -- After posting a 3-0 record at the Mid-American Match Play, Ball State’s Tyler Merkel was selected as the Mid-American Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week.
A senior from Evansville, Ind., Merkel led the Cardinals to the team title at the match play event. He played bogey free in two of his rounds, and none of his matches reached the final hole.
He opened with a 6 and 4 victory over Bowling Green’s Ryan Triller on Monday morning and followed it up with a 4 and 2 win over Xavier’s John Burger in the afternoon to help Ball State reach the finals. Merkel then topped Brett White, 3 and 1, in Tuesday’s championship round to help the Cardinals get by No. 1 seed Eastern Michigan.
The eight-team match play tournament included six MAC squads and was played on the South Course at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla. Ball State has now reached the finals in all three years of the tournament and won it twice.
Merkel, who is a three-time All-MAC selection, has now been named the MAC Golfer of the Week seven times in his career.
