MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State junior Tyler Merkel was selected Monday as Mid-American Conference Men's Co-Golfer of the Week.
Merkel finished first out of 92 golfers and led Ball State to the team title last week at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The Evansville, Ind., product carded a 54-hole total of 2-over par 214 (70-73-71). The Cardinals won the tournament by three strokes over VCU and Richmond.
Merkel's 73 in the second round matched the lowest score of the day and was one of only two scores better than 75 on the challenging Pinehurst No. 2 course, where the average score was higher than 81. Pinehurst No. 2 has hosted two U.S. Opens and will host another in 2014.
The first and third rounds were played at Pinehurst No. 6 with Merkel combining to play those two rounds in 1-under par on the way to his third career victory.
Merkel, who shares this week's honor with Kent State's Taylor Pendrith, has now finished among the top 5 individually in five of Ball State's six stroke-play events this year.
Ball State checks in at No. 35 in the latest Golfweek national rankings, while Merkel is No. 84 individually. The Cardinals have now won two tournaments this year and will return to action March 25-26 at the Memphis Intercollegiate.
