MUNCIE, Ind. - - For the second consecutive week, Ball State softball junior outfielder Jennifer Gilbert has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week as announced today by the league office.
This award marks the sixth time in her career that Gilbert has been named the MAC West Division Player of the Week, as she has now picked up the award twice as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
In the Cardinals' five games at the 2013 UCA Softball Tournament hosted by Central Arkansas, Gilbert led the Ball State offense with a .533 (8-for-15) batting average, while blasting two more home runs and drawing five walks. She also logged a pair of doubles, six runs scored and four RBI.
She opened the tournament by accounting for the Cardinals' only run in a 7-1 loss to Creighton Friday morning by hitting her 37th career home run. She also added a double and drew an intentional walk in the contest.
In BSU's 20-3 victory over Grambling, Gilbert tallied her second home run of the day moving her career total to 38 which is tied with Amanda Montalto (2009-12) for the school record. She would finish the contest 3-for-3 with two more intentional walks, two runs scored and one RBI.
In Saturday's 9-3 win over Northern Iowa, Gilbert was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. She followed with a 1-for-1 effort in the team's 14-0 (5) shutout win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, while also drawing a walk and scoring two runs in just two plate appearances.
After her second consecutive strong weekend, Gilbert leads the MAC with a .630 (17-for-27) batting average, a .714 on base percentage and 15 runs scored. Her five home runs, 1.296 slugging percentage and 17 total hits second in the league.
Gilbert and the Ball State softball team return to action Friday, when they open play in the Florida Atlantic University Classic with games versus Harvard (11 a.m.) and tournament host FAU (4 p.m.).
