MUNCIE, Ind. – The
Ball State men’s volleyball team dropped its first contest of the season, with
a 3-0 loss (25-20, 26-24, 25-17) to Grand Canyon Sunday evening at Worthen
Arena. Senior outside hitter Greg Herceg led the match with 18 kills.
Herceg led the way with a .237 clip (18-9-38). Sophomore
Shane Witmer and junior Kevin Owens each added seven kills. Witmer passed eight
digs, while Owens had a solo block and two assisted blocks. Matt Leske was
credited with two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Senior setter Dan
Wichmann added 21 assists while junior Graham McIlvaine tallied 15 sets. Libero
Tommy Rouse got under 10 digs and registered four assists.
For the match, Ball State hit .171 (42-23-111) to Grand
Canyon’s .198 percentage (34-16-91). Both teams were even with the blocking at
eight total team blocks a piece. The Cardinals made 10 service errors, while
the ‘Lopes managed three errors and six aces.
The Cardinals drop to 8-1 on the season and 3-1 in MIVA
play, while the ‘Lopes improve to 5-6 and 1-3 in league action.
The ‘Lopes were led by Gerrard Lipscombe who had 10 kills.
Keith Smith and Christian Ward each tallied four assisted blocks.
Ball State has a quick turnaround and is back in action on
Wednesday when it hosts IPFW for the last match in its five-match home stand.
