CARMEL, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team (0-2) came close to pulling off the 4-3 upset over No. 16 Illinois (2-0) Saturday night at the Carmel Racquet Club.
The Cardinals took an early 1-0 advantage over the Fighting Illini after winning the doubles point. Cliff Morrison paired up with Patrick Elliott to capture the 8-3 victory over Brian Page and Jared Hiltzik at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles Alexandre Brym and Imanol Arconda took down Ross Guignon and Bruno Abdelnour by a score of 8-5.
At No. 1 singles, Ray Leonard upset Stephen Hoh, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Ball State would then lose at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. It was a tight match at the No. 6 and No. 3 slots. Elliott managed a three set win over Brian Page to knot the match at 3-3. The match would then be decided between Dalton Albertin and Bruno Abdelnour at No 3 singles. Albertin won the first set 6-4 but would then drop sets two and three 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1).
Ball State will host Detroit Mercy Friday, Jan. 25, for its home opener at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center at 6 p.m. The Cardinals then face Eastern Illinois and Dayton in a double-header at home Jan. 26.
