MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team took down IUPUI by a score of 6-1 and then closed its double header with a SCORE victory over Chicago State in the night cap. With the win the Cardinals improve to 2-0 on the season.
This marks the second straight season that third year Ball State head women's tennis coach Christine Bader has coached the Cardinals to a victory in their spring opener.
Ball State took an early 1-0 advantage over Chicago State after capturing the doubles point. At No. 2 doubles Courtney Wild paired up with teammate Bethany Moore for the 8-3 defeat over Carynee Lloyd and Viviene Noel. The doubles tandem of Kristel Sanders and Lauren Pickrel won their second match of the day at No. 3 doubles with an 8-1 win over Mia Townsell and Mysta Townsell.
Both Wild and Courtney Earnest won their matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively, given Ball State the 3-0 edge over the Cougars. The victory would then be sealed after Sanders took down Noel by a score of 6-4, 6-2.
In their first match of the afternoon, Ball State earned a 6-1 victory over IUPUI. The Cardinals were able to claim the doubles point when the freshmen duo of Earnest and Ayaka Terashi won 8-4 over Vanessa Whyte and Abbey Neff at No. 1 doubles. No. 3 doubles pairing of Sanders and Pickrel managed to beat Bobbi Modesto and Shelby Hullet, 8-2.
Singles play was a success for the Cardinals, winning all but one match. Wild did not allow her opponent Modesto to win a game as she earned the 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. Earnest, Sanders, Moore and Rang were also winners in their respective positions.
The Ball State women's tennis team will host Milwaukee Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. First serve begins at Noon.
