Ball State's men's golf team finished fourth out of 16 teams at the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., and the Cardinals Tyler Merkel tied for medalist honors.
Central Florida won the event with a 282-293-295=870, while the Cardinals were fourth with a 286-302-301=889. Tulsa finished second with an 880, while Indiana was third with an 888. Ball State placed better than any of the seven Mid-American Conference schools at the event.
Merkel tied for first with UCF's Brad Schneider for the medalist honors. Merkel managed a 68-74-70=212, while Schneider shot a 69-70-73=212. The tournament victory marked the second in Merkel's career. He also won the Adidas Hoosier Invitational as a freshman last spring.
Alex Stinson tied for 17th after carding a 71-73-79=223. TJ Carpenter tied for 32nd with a 70-82-76=228, while Joe Gasser tied for 56th with a 78-80-76=234. Brodie Williams tied for 61st after managing a 77-75-83=235, and Zach Yinger placed 92nd while playing as an individual after firing an 86-80-85=251.
Joining Ball State at the 16-team event were Akron, Bowling Green, Central Florida, Eastern Michigan, East Tennessee State, Illinois, Illinois State, Indiana, Miami University, Northern Illinois, Purdue, St. Francis, Toledo, Tulsa and Virginia Tech.
Rich Harvest Farms, which will host the MAC Championships this spring, played to approximately 7,400 yards.
Ball State finished second at the MAC Championships last spring, marking the Cardinals third top three finish in the last six seasons for 14th-year head coach Mike Fleck.
