MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State junior catcher Zach Dygert (Angola, Ind./Angola) became the third Cardinal selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft as the Washington Nationals selected him in the 48th round with the 1,432nd pick overall. Dygert joins Jeremy Hazelbaker (fourth round) and Brenden Stines (33rd round) as draft picks this season and he is the 48th Ball State player all-time selected in the draft.
Dygert earned First Team All-Mid-American Conference honors this season as he finished with a .350 batting average. He was second on the team with 58 RBI while scoring 42 runs. He posted a .584 slugging percentage on the strength of 19 doubles and nine home runs. Dygert, who played in all but one game on the year, finished fourth in the MAC in doubles and sixth in the conference in RBI. He posted 23 multiple-hit games and 15 multiple-RBI contests during the year while also recording an 11-game hitting streak.
Ball State’s three draft picks this season are its most since it had four players drafted following the 2006 season when Ben Snyder, Brad Miller, Mike Sullivan and Jeff Loveys had their names called.
