MUNCIE, Ind. - - For her part in helping guide the Ball State softball team to a weekend sweep of Miami, senior first baseman Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week.

Rager, who shares this week’s honor with Toledo’s Lani Ernst, picks up the award for the second time this season and the fourth time in her career.

“Taylor has played an important role in our climb to the top of the MAC standings,” Ball State head coach Tyra Perry said. “She is determined to make the most of her senior year and that has shown in her play over the last few weeks. Not only has she come up with several big hits, but she has also been very patient at the plate and drawn walks in key situations.”

In Ball State’s two-game sweep of Miami, Rager posted a perfect weekend at the plate by going 3-for-3 (two singles and a home run) with three walks (including one intentional) to help the Cardinals take sole possession of first place in the MAC overall standings. In the opener versus the RedHawks, Rager drew walks in her first two plate appearances and logged a leadoff single in the two-run sixth. After her single, she eventually came around to score the game-tying run.

In Sunday’s victory over Miami, Rager singled in her first at bat in the bottom of the second and would come around to score the game’s first run. In the third inning, Rager came up to bat with a pair of runners in scoring position and no outs and was intentionally walked. Senior third baseman Audrey Bickel (Munster, Ind./Andrean) followed with a grand slam to give BSU a 5-1 edge. In the fourth inning, Rager blasted the second pitch of her at bat over the wall in right-center field against a wind that was blowing in at over 25 miles per hour to give BSU a 9-1 lead which ultimately led to the run-rule victory.

Rager enters her final MAC regular season weekend with a .500 (15-for-30) batting average in league play, and has drawn 11 walks to boast a MAC-best .634 on base percentage. She has 13 runs batted in and 11 runs scored over Ball State’s 12 conference games, and has tallied four doubles, three home runs and a triple.

Rager and the rest of the Ball State softball team close the regular season this weekend by hosting Central Michigan for a Friday (1 pm) doubleheader and Eastern Michigan for single games Saturday (2 pm) and Sunday (1 pm).
