AKRON, Ohio - - Despite a strong effort from sophomore pitcher Kelsey Schifferdecker (Belton, Mo./Belton), the Ball State softball team suffered a 3-0 setback to Ohio Thursday in the 2014 MAC Softball Championship at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 33-18 on the year and will play Northern Illinois in the 1:30 p.m. elimination game Friday.
“Those kinds of games are tough,” Ball State head coach Tyra Perry said. “I thought our defense got off to a slow start today, and we couldn’t get anything going on offense. We have to put this game behind us and come out and play our game tomorrow. That’s the beauty of a double elimination tournament. We will get a chance to bounce back tomorrow. I thought Kelsey did a great job in the circle. Even with a little adversity in the first inning, I thought she stayed strong and kept us in the game.”
All of the game’s offense was generated in the first inning, with Ohio (30-24) climbing out to a 3-0 lead. With runners on the corners and one out, Alexandria Basques dropped a RBI single into right field to drive in the first run of the game. After an infield single loaded the bases, Bobcats pitcher Savannah Jo Dorsey brought in the second run with a sacrifice fly to left field. What proved to be the final run of the game came around on a Ball State error, making the score 3-0.
Ohio would also load the bases with one out in the bottom of the second, only to see Schifferdecker force a pair of pop flies to end the inning. From there, Schifferdecker would hold the Bobcats to just four base runners over her final four innings of work. She finished the game allowing nine hits and three runs, only two of which were earned, while striking out a pair of batters.
On the other side, Dorsey turned in a perfect performance, retiring all 21 Ball State batters she faced. The hardest out of the game was the final one, as senior left fielder Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) drove the ball to deep right-center field, but Ohio center fielder Alyssa Wolfe crashed through the temporary fence to make the game-ending out.
