MUNCIE, Ind. - - In its final tune-up before the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, the Ball state track & field team returns to action Thursday at the Hillsdale Classic hosted by Hillsdale College.
Field events are slated to start at noon with the hammer throw, while running events begin at 4 p.m. with the 100m hurdles. This will be the final chance for Ball State’s student-athletes to qualify for the league meet, which caps each event at 20 participants or all automatic qualifiers if there are more than 20. If 20 student-athletes did not post automatic marks in an event, entrants are selected going down the conference performance list. Only three student-athletes from the same school can be entered in an event.
So far, three Cardinals have posted automatic qualifying marks into the MAC Outdoor Championships. The most recent came last week, when junior Hannah Ciasto-Poor (Bloomington, Ind. /Bloomington South) posted a school record mark of 3.72m in the pole vault at last weekend’s Dave Rankin Invitational. The effort stands as the 11th-best in the conference this season.
Junior Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) enters the week as one of the favorites in the MAC in the long jump, with an automatic qualifying mark of 6.04m set at the RedHawk Invitational (May 2). Crawford also enters the week ranked 12th in the league in the 100m dash at 12.01 also set at the RedHawk Invitational.
Ball State’s final automatic qualifier is junior Haley Austin (Avon, Ind./Avon) who ranks fifth in the MAC in the high jump after posting a career-best mark of 1.70m at the Cardinal Invitational.
Overall, a total of 15 Ball State student-athletes are ranked in the top 20 in their respective events on the MAC performance list entering the Hillsdale Classic.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Ball State’s junior twin sister duo of Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) and Caitlynn Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) are ranked 14th (11:16.02) and 16th (11:24.53), respectively, in the MAC.
In throws, senior Erin Walker (Laurell Hill, Fla./Paxton/Troy) ranks 14th in the MAC in the hammer throw (50.54m) and 15th in the discus (45.59m), while sophomore Michaela Hull (Bloomington, Ind./South) is poised to qualify for the league meet in three events, ranking 13th in the javelin (35.92m), 18th in the discus (44.36m) and 23rd in the shot put (12.20m).
