MUNCIE, Ind. - - After posting a 3-1 record in the circle for the Ball State softball team last week, sophomore Nicole Steinbach (Merrillville, Ind./Andrean) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week.
Steinbach picks up the honor for the second time this season and the eighth time in her career. She shares this week's award with Eastern Michigan's Alyssa Huntley.
In four appearances in the circle for the Cardinals last week, Steinbach throwing a team-high 25.1 innings of work and posted a 4.42 earned-run average. In last Wednesday’s win at Butler, Steinbach held the Bulldogs scoreless over six innings, allowing just two hits while collecting four strikeouts .
Steinbach rebounded from a tough loss against No. 18 Missouri last Friday, by earning back-to-back complete game victories over North Dakota State and UMKC. On Saturday, she held the Bison to just six hits and four runs, while collecting three strikeouts. In Sunday’s Mizzou Tournament finale against UMKC, Steinbach limited the Kangaroos to just one earned run while striking out six batters.
Steinbach and the Ball State softball team are scheduled to open the 2014 MAC season Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Buffalo. From there, the Cardinals are slated to travel to Kent State for single games Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
