AKRON, Ohio - The fourth seeded Ball State softball team (34-23) fell to top-seeded Western Michigan (22-27) by a score of 8-4 Thursday afternoon at Firestone Stadium
After a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals managed to cross the plate twice in the top of the second after some Western Michigan errors and a two RBI double from Alyssa Collins. Collins double allowed Ball State to take the early 2-0 edge over the Broncos. WMU managed a run at the bottom of the second to make it a 2-1 ball game.
Lisa Rozanski, Alison Mercado and Collins all reached base on WMU errors in the top of the fourth. Amanda Montalto singled to left field allowing Mercado and Rozanski to cross the plate unearned given BSU a 4-1 advantage over WMU. Western Michigan answered back with five runs of its own to take 6-4 lead to end the fourth.
The Broncos added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth which secured the victory for WMU.
Audra Sanders suffered the loss for the Cardinals after 4.0 innings of work she gave up five runs off of seven hits while striking out three batters. Sanders record drops to 18-15 on the season. Meredith Whitney won the game for the Broncos improving to 14-12.
The fourth seeded Ball State Cardinals will take on the winner of No. 7 Miami versus No. 3 Northern Illinois Friday at 1:20 p.m.
