Softball Swept by Bowling Green after Sunday Loss

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Ball State Softball dropped to 32-19 on the season and 12-5 in Mid-American Conference play after Bowling Green swept the series with a 5-4 contest in 14 innings Sunday afternoon at Meserve Field. With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-31 overall and 3-14 in league action.

Bowling Green opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Andrea Arney drew a walk off junior pitcher Audrey Workman (Wickenburg, Ariz./Wickenbrug) with the bases loaded to score Hannah Fulk.

Then, Katie Yoho's 2-RBI single brought home Paige Berger and Rachel Proehl and a wild pitch scored Arney to help give the Falcons an early 4-0 lead against the Cardinals.

Ball State answered back right away in the top of the second as senior right fielder Alyssa Collins' (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) base-hit through the right side scored sophomore left fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana), who got on base after she doubled into left field.

In the top of the third inning, a Bowling Green error allowed freshman first baseman Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) to reach first and she advanced to third after freshman designated hitter Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) doubled to right center field.

Then, Carpenter reached base on a Falcon error to score Rager and senior center fielder Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) singled up the middle to bring home Gilbert, narrowing the gap to 4-3.

The Cardinals evened the score in the top of the fourth as Rager doubled to right center field and advanced to third on the throw, scoring junior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde).

Then in extra innings with the bases loaded, Arney's sac fly out to center field brought in Fulk to score Bowling Green's fifth and game-winning run in the bottom of the 14th.

Sophomore pitcher Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) dropped to 17-12 on the season with the loss for the Cardinals. After 2.0 innings of work, Sanders gave up one run off two hits, while walking four batters.

Head coach Craig Nicholson and the Cardinals return to the BSU Softball Complex next weekend for their final contests of the regular season, as Ball State hosts Western Michigan and Northern Illinois.

Ball State's seniors - Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City. Okla./Putnam City), Collins, Rozanski, Kristy Stratton (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw) and Kate Wilczynski (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) - will be recognized Sunday, which has been designated Senior Day at the park.
