BLOOMFIELD, Ind. - The Ball State University softball team (27-17, 7-3 MAC) fell to in-state rival Indiana, 3-0, (14-11, 2-2 Big 10) Wednesday afternoon at the IU Softball Field.
With the loss, BSU drops to 27-17 overall, while Indiana improves to 28-15.
After four and a half scoreless innings, the Hoosiers' Kelsey Stander singled to second base and Samantha Heyman's sac-bunt ground out to third base advanced her to second. Then, Breanna Saucedo singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw, which scored Stander on the play. Then, Ashley Warrum's base-hit to right center field brought Saucedo home.
Morgan Melloh led the bottom of the sixth inning off with a double to right center field, followed by Jenna Abraham's base-hit through the left side. With an Indiana runner in scoring position, Cassie Gogreve singled to left field to bring home Shelby Gogreve, who was pinch running for Melloh.
In its last inning, Ball State left two on base but the Cardinals were unable to score. Freshman designated hitter Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) drew a walk off Melloh and senior third baseman Kate Wilczynski (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) was hit by a pitch.
With Wilczynski and Gilbert at first and second, Melloh struck out sophomore catcher Sadie Robertson (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) and freshman Audrey Bickel (Munster, Ind./Andrean), pinch hitting for senior center fielder Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Daytona Beach CC), to close the contest.
Gilbert went 1-for-2 at the plate, while Robertson went 1-for-3, both tallying a stolen base. Sophomore pitcher Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) recorded the loss on the mound after 5.1 innings of work, giving up three runs, allowing eight hits and walking one batter, falling to 14-10 on the season.
