COLUMBIA, Mo. - - Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Schifferdecker (Belton, Mo./Belton) shut down UMKC, while Ball State softball’s offense continued to roll in an 8-0 (5 inn.) victory Saturday night at Missouri’s University Field.
The Cardinals (17-11) close play in the three-day Mizzou Tournament Sunday afternoon with a 1 pm ET / Noon CT rematch of tonight’s game versus the Kangaroos (10-18). The game was scheduled to start at 1:15 pm ET / 12:15 pm CT, but was moved up when the morning’s first game was cancelled.
Earlier today, Ball State secured a 6-4 win over North Dakota State and enter tomorrow’s finale with a 2-2 record in the Mizzou Tournament.
In picking up her second complete game shutout victory of the season Saturday night, Schifferdecker limited the ‘Roos to just four hits over 5.0 innings of work. She logged three strikeouts and helped the defense produce a pair of double plays.
Senior third baseman Audrey Bickel (Munster, Ind./Andrean) provided the biggest Ball State hit of the night, depositing her third career grand slam over the left field wall to give the Cardinals a 7-0 edge in the fifth inning. Bickel also started the scoring with a RBI groundout in the top of the third.
Sophomore center fielder Briana Evans (Tulsa, Okla./Union) led the Cardinals with three hits against the ‘Roos, including a leadoff triple in the three-run third. It was Evans’ second triple of the day and her fourth of the season.
Senior designated player Lauren Schroeder (Greenfield, Ind./New Palestine) and junior right fielder Hanne Stuedemann (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) each collected a pair versus UMKC.
Following Evans’ leadoff triple in the third, senior left fielder Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) and senior first baseman Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) drew back-to-back one-out walks to load the bases. Bickel followed with an RBI groundout to third base to drive in the game’s first run. Schroeder then drove a two-run double down the left field line to bring home Gilbert and Rager, making the score 3-0.
After a scoreless fourth inning, sophomore second baseman Emily Dabkowski (Plainfield, Ind./South Putnam) led off the fifth with a walk. Gilbert followed with a single, while Rager drew her second consecutive walk to load the bases. Bickel then blasted a 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field for her third career grand slam.
The rally continued as Schroeder reached base on a UMKC error, while Stuedemann singled up the middle to put a pair of runners on. A fielder’s choice from freshman catcher Shelbie Scamihorn (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo) led to the first out of the inning, but freshman pinch hitter Hayley Cruthers (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) singled to short, loading the bases. Evans followed with a RBI single to right driving in BSU’s eighth and final run of the game.
Katie Kelley suffered the pitching loss for UMKC, allowing five hits and four runs over 4.0 innings of work.
