MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State softball team spent this past Wednesday (Oct. 30) helping local families in need by volunteering at the Blood-N-Fire food pantry.

On the last Wednesday of every month, community members in need of extra food assistance are invited to Blood-N-Fire to receive free groceries. Attendees are welcomed with drinks and snacks, plus may choose which available food items they prefer. An average of 230 families are served each month.

To help the program, members of the Ball State softball team spent the day bagging groceries, visiting with clients, distributing cookies and drinks, and providing assistance to elderly and disabled clients.

“I thought it was an amazing experience for me to share with my teammates,” said Ball State senior outfielder Jennifer Gilbert. “We have been given so much to get us where we are, and to be able to give back was an awesome feeling. To see the smiles on the families’ faces brought such joy to all of us.”

“I am very proud to be part of a team which works hard not only on the field, but also works hard to make a difference off of the field,” said freshman outfielder Taylor Cooley. “Volunteering for Blood-N-Fire was an eye opening experience for my team. Helping feed families in need made me reflect on how thankful I am for the opportunities my family and I have been presented throughout life. Today I grew closer with my community, and enjoyed getting to know the families I helped. The community members we served were gracious and made a positive impact on my outlook on life. I would like to go back and volunteer again.”
