MUNCIE, Ind. - - For the second consecutive week, Ball State sophomore left fielder Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week.

In addition, Gilbert was also named the Madness Softball Mid-American Conference Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Gilbert is the third BSU player this season to earn praise by College Sports Madness.

"Jenny had another outstanding week," said Ball State head coach Craig Nicholson. "She is really locked in right now and seeing the ball well. Jenny is a vital part of our offense and is providing our team with a lot of confidence."

A four-time career MAC Player of the Week, Gilbert helped lead the Cardinals to a 3-1 record last week, including a midweek win over in-state rival Purdue and a weekend sweep of then MAC East Division leader Miami.

In BSU's four games last week, Gilbert tallied a team-high .615 (8-for-13) batting average, with seven of the eight hits being multi-base knocks. In BSU's Sunday doubleheader at Miami, Gilbert turned in one of the most impressive two-game performances of her collegiate career by blasting three home runs, a triple and a double over the two games. She also walked three times and finished the day with a 2.833 slugging percentage, a .833 (5-for-6) batting average, seven runs scored and six RBI.

She opened the week by tallying a double and a home run to help guide Ball State to a 9-7 win over Purdue in the first game of a Thursday doubleheader and finished that contest with four RBI and two runs scored. In the nightcap versus the Boilermakers she was hit by a pitch and would later score a run.

Gilbert, who has now reached base in a career-best 22 consecutive games, enters the week ranked first in the nation with a 0.41 doubles-per-game average thanks to her MAC-best 16 doubles. She also leads the league with 11 home runs and ranks 41st nationally with a 0.28 home runs per game.

Gilbert is also one of the top run producers in the nation, ranking sixth in runs per game (1.21) and 33rd in RBI per game (1.0). Gilbert's 47 runs scored this season are 10 more than anyone else in the league, while her 39 RBI are two ahead of the pack.

Gilbert and the Ball State softball team return to action Wednesday, when they hosts Indiana in a 4 p.m. non-conference first pitch at the BSU Softball Complex.
