Surane Earns Second Honorable Mention

MUNCIE, Ind. – Men’s volleyball freshman outside attacker Brendan Surane has earned his second Honorable Mention of the season for the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc., National Freshman of the Week award. Surane helped Ball State in two victories this past weekend over Grand Canyon, including a career-high 17 kills in the match on Sat., Apr. 5.

Surane tallied a .211 hitting percentage in the second match against Grand Canyon with 17 kills off 38 swings. The freshman had a service ace, four digs and two blocks for the Cardinals, who locked up a home match in the MIVA Quarterfinals.

The Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Freshman of the Week is presented to the NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball freshman who had the most outstanding performance during the week.

The winner is announced every Monday during the regular season on the Off the Block website, offtheblockblog.com.

Each of the four NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball conferences have an opportunity each week to nominate one player for the National Freshman of the Week. In addition, fans and teams can nominate a player for the National Freshman of the Week by tweeting their nominee to the official Twitter account of Off the Block, @offtheblock11.

Off the Block is a website that started in January 2011 and has become among the national leaders in college men’s volleyball coverage. Springbak, Inc. is the official sponsor of the 2014 Freshmen All-American Team and National Freshman of the Week and produces high performance footwear used by professional athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB and U.S. Olympic teams and the top college teams in the nation.

Ball State (19-7, 8-4 MIVA) wraps up the regular season this Friday and Saturday at Worthen Arena. The match against Lindenwood is set for 7:30 p.m. on Fri., Apr. 4 while the match against Quincy is set for 4 p.m. on Sat., Apr. 5. Following the conclusion of the Quincy match Ball State’s five seniors will be recognized. The matches will be televised via Ball State Sports Link.
