Men's Volleyball Opens Season With St. Francis

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men’s volleyball team opens up the 2013 campaign this weekend at home against St. Francis. The match is set to start at 7:30 p.m. at John E. Worthen Arena.

SCOUTING  BALL STATE: The Cardinals lost two letter winners from last season due to graduation and returns nearly its entire line up. Jamion Hartley leads the returners in offense, having connected of 2.50 kills per set in 2012. Kevin Owens knocked in 182 kills last season and registered 1.05 blocks per set. Matt Leske, who was named to the preseason All-MIVA team, had 1.32 blocks per set last season to go with 1.59 kills per set. Graham McIlvane had 16 aces in 2012 to lead the team to go with 8.54 assists per set. Tommy Rouse was able to get under 224 digs for a 2.43 digs per set average.

LAST SEASON: The Cardinals finished up last season with a 14-12 mark including going 5-7 in MIVA play.

SCOUTING ST. FRANCIS: The Red Flash opened up its season with a 3-0 loss at the hands of No. 11 Ohio State (17-25, 22-25, 16-25). Logan Patterson led the way for the Red Flash with 11 kills and a .304 hitting percentage. Mike Krepp notched 25 assists and a team-high six digs. St. Francis will play IPFW on Friday evening at 7 p.m.

SERIES RECORD: Ball State leads the all-time series 11-4 and holds a 6-1 record against St. Francis in Muncie. The two squads split their matchups last season with the Red Flash winning in five sets on Jan. 13 (18-25, 19-25, 30-28, 25-22, 10-15) and the Cardinals coming back with a sweep on Jan. 21 (25-23, 26-24, 25-20).

LAST MEETING: Jamion Hartley led the offense for the Cardinals the last time these two teams faced off, notching 12 kills and connecting on a .320 hitting percentage. Tommy Rouse led BSU with 11 digs, while Matt Leske and Kevin Owens tied for a match-high five blocks a piece. Ball State finished with a .195 to .170 hitting advantage and out-blocked the Red Flash 11-5. St. Francis did hold the advantage in digs, 28-25.
