MVB's Furnish Earns AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. -  Ball State men’s volleyball assistant coach Kevin Furnish was honored by the AVCA as the National Assistant Coach of the Year announced Thursday, May 2. 

Furnish organizes the team’s community service projects which have included work for Habitat for Humanity, the Second Food Harvest Bank and McAlson Wheels among others.

Furnish’s primary duty is team defense and primarily training the middle attackers. This season Kevin Owens and Matt Leske were named to the First Team and Second Team All-MIVA. Ball State earned eight MIVA Defensive Player of the Week nods during the season.

Since the most recent statistical rankings from the NCAA on April 21, the Cardinals are ranked first in the country with 10.87 digs per set and 2.99 blocks per set. Leske and Owens are second and fifth in the nation in blocks per set with averages of 1.43 and 1.33 respectively while Tommy Rouse has the third-best digs per set average in the country at 2.92.

Furnish identified and recruited Ball State’s five 2013 MIVA First and Second Team members -- Jamion Hartley, Greg Herceg, Kevin Owens, Tommy Rouse and Matt Leske.

The AVCA will formally present Furnish with the award at the 2013 Jostens Coaches Honor Luncheon in Seattle, Wa., on Thursday, Dec. 19. The luncheon is help in conjunction with the 2013 AVCA Annual Convention.
