ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 15 Ball State men’s volleyball team defeated the Lindenwood Lions in straight sets (25-14, 27-25, 27-25) Saturday evening. Outside attackers Jamion Hartley and Greg Herceg lead the way offensively with 13 and 11 kills, while middle attackers Matt Leske and Kevin Owens combined for five and a half total blocks.
With the win, the Cardinals move to 18-5 on the season and 7-5 in MIVA action while the Lions fall to 19-10 on the year and 5-7 in league play. Ball State is on a 10-match winning streak and has won the last 12 sets. The Cardinal’s 10-match winning streak is the longest since the 11-match winning streak during the 2008 season (Feb. 8 – Mar. 22).
Hartley’s 13 kills came off a .290 clip (13-4-31) while Herceg had a .348 hitting percentage (11-3-23). Herceg tallied four service aces for the second consecutive match. Shane Witmer and Owens registered eight kills on the night with hitting percentages of .438 and .615, respectively.
Leske was credited with a solo block and four assisted blocks while Owens contributed to five assisted blocks. Tommy Rouse got under 11 digs while Graham McIlvaine and Witmer had five digs. McIlvaine had 38 assists to go with his three assisted blocks.
Ball State outhit Lindenwood .372 (43-8-94) to .184 (39-21-98) and held the advantage in blocking (10.5-4.5). The Cardinals had eight service aces to Lindenwood’s three.
With the win the Cardinals have the ability to clinch the No. 3 seed in the MIVA tournament if they win their last two conference matches.
Ball State will host Lewis and Loyola next week at Worthen Arena on Thursday, Apr. 11 and Saturday, Apr. 13. Senior Night will take place on Saturday to honor Greg Herceg, Jamion Hartley, Dan Wichmann and Tommy Rouse. Both matches will be televised by SportsLink.
