MUNCIE, Ind. - - Redshirt sophomore middle attacker Matt Leske (Highwood, Ill./Highland Park) and sophomore middle attacker Kevin Owens (Fishers, Ind./Cathedral) of the Ball State men's volleyball team both been named to the All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Second Team as voted on by the league's seven head coaches.
Leske, who earns All-MIVA honors for the first time in his career, enters the MIVA Tournament ranked first in the league and ninth nationally with a 1.29 blocks-per-set average. His 1.55 blocking average in league-only matches also ranked first among all MIVA players.
In addition to being the team's top blocker, Leske ranked fifth in MIVA-only matches with a .354 attack percentage. In 44 conference sets, Leske racked up 80 kills on 144 swings while recording just 29 hitting errors. He also served up two aces in MIVA action, while tallying 11 digs.
Owens, who also garners All-MIVA accolades for the first time in his career, finished the regular season ranked third in the conference with a .405 hitting percentage, including a .371 rate of success in MIVA action.
In addition to his solid attacking numbers, Owens ranked fifth in the league with a 1.07 blocks-per-set average, including a 1.02 mark in MIVA-only matches. In conference play, Owens racked up 87 kills, 16 digs and three aces.The Ball State men's volleyball team opens play in the 2012 MIVA Tournament Saturday, with a 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. MST first serve at Grand Canyon. The 'Lopes are the No. 4 seed in the tournament, while the Cardinals are the No. 5 seed, with the winner advancing to play at No. 1 Ohio State Wednesday.
