MUNCIE, Ind. – The No. 13 Ball State men’s volleyball team won its seventh consecutive match Saturday evening after picking up a 3-1 victory (25-19, 25-19, 27-29, 25-3) over Lees McRae in Worthen Arena. Sophomore Marcin Niemczewski and junior Matt Sutherland registered 11 kills each, while senior middle attackers Matt Leske and Kevin Owens combined for 13 kills.
With the win Ball State improves to 14-5 on the season while Lees McRae falls to 12-9. The Cardinals’ 25-3 win in the fourth set was the first time Ball State had held an opponent to three points or less in a set since the 2000 season. In a match vs. Long Island South Hampton on Jan. 15, 2000 Ball State won 15-2, 15-3, 12-15, 15-0.
Niemczewski saw action in three sets on the night and picked up six digs, four blocks and an ace to go with his 11 kills. Sutherland tallied a career-high 11 kills of 23 swings for a .391 attack percentage. The junior picked up eight digs, three blocks and a service ace.
Leske and Owens both hit over .500 on the night with Leske tallying six kills (6-1-9) and Owens registering seven (7-1-11). Leske turned in two service aces as well as seven assisted blocks.
Junior Shane Witmer passed 28 balls on the night without committing a reception error. Witmer got under a season-high 13 digs while tying his career-high of three service aces. Junior David Ryan Vander Meer also had a flawless night passing, with 19 receptions and no errors. The libero picked up a team-high 15 digs to go with four assists.
Senior Graham McIlvaine saw time in three sets and picked up 25 assists, a season-high-tying three service aces and five digs. Sophomore Hiago Garchet played in the third set and tallied 13 assists, two kills and three digs.
Ball State hit .293 on the night (50-16-116) to Lees McRae’s .089 clip (39-27-135). The Cardinals had success from behind the service line with 11 aces, while the Bobcats managed only one ace on the night. Ball State also held the advantage in total team blocks (13-10.5) and digs (59-46).
