No. 13 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Belmont Abbey

MUNCIE, Ind. – The No. 13 Ball State men’s volleyball team defeated Belmont Abbey (25-9, 25-14, 25-21) on Friday evening for its fourth-straight win. Freshman Brendan Surane led the way for the Cardinals with a career-high 12 kills.

With the win Ball State improves to 11-5 on the season while Belmont Abbey falls to 2-15.

The Cardinals finished the match hitting .415 (44-10-82) led by Surane’s .500 hitting percentage (12-2-20). The freshman added a career-high seven digs as well. Junior Matt Sutherland added five kills in tw sets of play while senior Kevin Owens, sophomore Jack Lesure and senior Larry Wrather added four kills. Senior Matt Leske, junior Shane Witmer and sophomore Marcin Niemczewski each tallied three kills apiece.

All three Ball State setters saw time in the match led by senior Graham McIlvaine who had 19 assists. Sophomore Hiago Garchet dished out 11 assists while freshman Connor Gross tied his career high of six.

Junior David Ryan Vander Meer matched Surane’s seven digs while eight other Cardinals tallied at least one dig on the night. Owens assisted on five blocks to help Ball State hold a 10-3 advantage in total team blocks.

Belmont Abbey hit -.014 on the night with three players earning four kills. Libero Johnny Gomez led the match with eight digs.
