Men's Volleyball Defeats McKendree in Straight Sets

MUNCIE, Ind. – Fifteen Cardinals saw playing time in Ball State men’s vollleyball’s 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-13) win over McKendree Friday evening at Worthen Arena. Several Cardinals earned season and career-best figures on the night including freshman Mike Scannell who had seven kills, a solo block and an assisted block. Sophomore Marcin Niemczewski led the match with 10 kills while senior Larry Wrather added seven kills.

With the win, Ball State improves to 2-3 on the season. McKendree, who was playing its first match in program history, stands at 0-1 on the campaign.

Scannell had his best attacking percentage of the season with a .667 clip (7-1-9) in only two sets of play. He passed six passes with no reception errors while also picking up two digs, a solo block and an assisted block. Niemczewski had 10 kills on 19 attempts to go with three service aces, including two that were back-to-back late in the second set that led to set point. The sophomore also added four digs and two assisted blocks.

Wrather equaled Scannell’s attack percentage at .667 (7-1-9). Wrather passed eight balls with no reception errors, was credited with a dig and knocked in two service aces. Junior David Ryan Vander Meer was the libero throughout the match and picked up eight digs. Also playing all three sets was senior Kevin Owens who ended with a solo block, three assisted blocks and three kills.

All three setters on the Ball State roster were given time in the match led by senior Graham McIlvaine who had 12 assists and two digs. Sophomore transfer Hiago Garchet played the second set and picked up 10 assists. Freshman Connor Gross rounded out the match earning six assists, a service ace, a dig and an assisted block in the third set.

Also playing in his first collegiate match was freshman Alex Pia who had two kills, a dig, a solo block and two assisted blocks in two sets of action. Classmate Brendan Surane added two kills and an ace.

Ball State hit a .397 clip on the night (36-11-63) to McKendree’s -.058 attack percentage (18-22-69). The Cardinals held the advantage in total blocks (9-3), service aces (8-1) and digs (23-13).

Ball State is back in action next Friday, January 31, when it travels up to face intrastate rival IPFW for a 7 p.m. match. Check for more news and information.
