MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men’s volleyball team announced its 2013 schedule of 28 matches Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals will face members of the MPSF, EIVA and Conference Carolinas. The team will have 16 matches at John E. Worthen Arena this upcoming season.
“This year’s schedule will be highly competitive,” said 2013 MIVA Coach of the Year Joel Walton. “We expect stiff competition from teams in our league. The schedule will challenge the team against many of the nation’s best teams from the MPSF, EIVA and Conference Carolinas.”
The Cardinals will open up the season hosting the defending national champions, UC-Irvine on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m. The match will mark the first time the two squads have faced off since the 2000 season. The match will be the first time Anteaters have played in Muncie.
Following the match against UC-Irvine, Ball State will host its annual alumni match on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. Ball State will host EIVA member Sacred Heart on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. before traveling to Pennsylvania for matches against Saint Francis (Jan. 17) and Penn State (Jan. 18). The Cardinals will wrap up the month of January hosting McKendree on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. before heading up I-69 for its first MIVA contest against IPFW on Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
The Cardinals will have two-straight road trips to begin the month of February going to George Mason (Feb. 7) and Princeton (Feb. 8) before going to Quincy (Feb. 14) and Lindenwood (Feb. 15). The team will return back to Muncie for a Feb. 20 match against Loyola before traveling to Lewis on Feb. 22. The Cardinals will travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio State on Wednesday, Feb. 26 and will return home to begin a nine-match home stand with Barton on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
The month of March sees the Cardinals staying home for three weeks hosting Mt. Olive (Mar. 1), Belmont Abbey (Mar. 7), King (Mar. 8), IPFW (Mar. 11), Lees McCrea (Mar. 15), Harvard (Mar. 16), NJIT (Mar. 20) and Ohio State (Mar. 23). Ball State will take to the road for a Mar. 27 matchup with Loyola and will host Lewis on Saturday, Mar. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
Ball State will travel to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon on Friday, Apr. 4 and Saturday, Apr. 5. The squad will wrap up the season at home hosting Lindenwood on Friday, Apr. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Quincy on Saturday, Apr. 12 at 4 p.m.
The 2014 MIVA Tournament will begin Saturday, Apr. 19 with the quarterfinals being held at the site of the highest seed. The semifinal (Apr. 23) and the championship (Apr. 26) matches will also follow the same format and will be held at the site of the highest seeds.
Loyola-Chicago will host the 2014 NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championships with the semifinals on Thursday, May 1 and the championship match on Saturday, May 3.
The team will play four fall tournaments to prepare for the season at Lewis, Ohio State and IPFW. Ball State will also host a fall tournament.
